Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy at Apex Clinic

What is PRP for hair loss treatment and how does it work?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss involves extracting a small amount of blood from the client, isolating the growth factors and bioactive proteins responsible for tissue repair and regeneration and then injecting this platelet-rich plasma into the scalp. This treatment addresses concerns such as hair loss, thinning and breakage by stimulating the growth of existing hair follicles, resulting in fuller and healthier-looking hair without the need for surgery. PRP treatment is effective for both male and female pattern baldness as well as alopecia and it can also promote new hair growth and aid in stimulating hair growth after transplants, making it a natural solution for hair restoration.

How is PRP performed?

A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient, similar to a blood test and then placed into a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from other blood components. After this separation, the PRP layer is extracted and reintroduced into the body at the treatment site. The PRP is either injected or applied using microneedling techniques, depending on the desired outcome.

What are the side effects?

As with any medical procedure, there may be some side effects associated with PRP therapy, such as redness, swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort at the injection site. However, these side effects are typically temporary and should resolve within a few days. It’s essential to follow the post-treatment care instructions provided by our pharmacist to minimise potential side effects and achieve optimal results.

How many sessions are needed for hair loss treatment?

The number of PRP therapy sessions required for the scalp varies from person to person, but most individuals will undergo 3-4 sessions spaced one month apart, with maintenance treatments every 3 months thereafter. Results can typically be observed within 2-4 weeks, with ongoing improvement over the following months as collagen and elastin production continue.

Hair Energy Serum

Before PRP is used, a serum containing a combination of active ingredients specially designed to maintain scalp vitality and act on follicle dysfunctions in order to achieve good anti-hair loss results and improve hair quality is used. This advanced formula combines antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties with powerful hair growth-stimulating effects, promoting healthier, stronger hair. It combines antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects with a hair growth stimulating effect. This hair serum is suitable for hormonal or hereditary hair loss, tired, dehydrated hair or for slow hair growth. Key ingredients include:

  • Hydrolyzed Collagen – Provides specific amino acids necessary to replenishing the body’s collagen. Thickens fine hair and slows down hair loss.
  • Citrullus Colocynthis Fruit Extract – Stimulates hair growth, with an effect comparable to finasteride.
  • Velvet Extract – Promotes hair growth by regulating the hair cycle and cell proliferation in hair follicles.
  • Angelica Acutiloba Root Extract – Protects from hair loss and promotes hair growth.
  • Rheum Palmatum Root Extract – Protects from hair loss and promotes hair growth.
  • Centella Asiatica Extract- Increases the supply of blood to the capillaries under the skin and can improve the health and condition of the skin’s surface layers. It can also stimulate hair growth by delivering an increased flow of oxygenated blood to the hair follicles.
  • Polygonum Cuspidatum Extract – Activates collagen, increases fibroblasts and hair follicles and reduces inflammatory cells.
  • Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract – A good antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory agent.
  • Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green tea) – Has anti-inflammatory effects, known to prevent hair loss and encourage hair regrowth.
  • Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract – Promotes hair growth, even faster than Minoxidil.
  • Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract – Has healing and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract – Used for preventing and treating baldness, as well as treating circulation problems, eczema, and for wound healing.
  • Panthenol – Functions as a humectant that increases the water content of hair and improves its elasticity. Panthenol is inactive but is readily converted to pantothenic acid in the skin. Pantothenic acid is then incorporated as an important component in the energy cycle of the cell.
  • Panthenol can also attract water into the upper layer of the skin and is thus effective as a moisturiser and softener.
  • Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil – A healing elixir, rich in essential fatty acids that impart moisture directly to the hair and scalp.

PRP for Skin Rejuvenation

Microneedling is a popular cosmetic procedure that stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin in the skin by puncturing the dermis with microscopic needles. This treatment utilises the skin’s natural ability to heal itself, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin. In addition to treating pores, fine wrinkles, loss of elasticity, scarring and pigmentation, microneedling also enables topical products to penetrate deeper into the skin, increasing their effectiveness.

PRP Microneedling

PRP microneedling, also known as the vampire facial, combines microneedling with the application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derived from the patient’s blood. PRP is obtained by drawing a small amount of blood and then processing it to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other components. Platelets contain growth factors that play a crucial role in tissue repair and regeneration.

The treatment involves applying a pen-like device to the skin’s surface. This device has tiny needles that penetrate the upper layer of skin and break up old strands of collagen in the lower layer. The wound healing response stimulated by this process promotes new collagen and elastin formation, which helps improve out fine lines, wrinkles and acne scarring. It also reduces the appearance of pigmentation, enlarged pores and stretch marks.

Microneedling is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that can be used on both the face and body to address concerns such as aging skin, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring and stretch marks. This treatment can be offered as a stand-alone procedure or combined with other non-surgical treatments for optimal results. Your pharmacist will advise on a treatment plan tailored to your skin goals.

What Happens on Treatment Day?

On the day of the treatment, your face will be thoroughly cleansed and numbing cream will be applied. Once the numbing cream has taken effect, your skin will be cleaned again. The pharmacist will test your skin to ensure adequate numbness before starting the procedure. Most people experience little to no discomfort.

How Long Does It Take to See the Results?

For skin rejuvenation, a course of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is recommended, with longer treatment periods for addressing acne scars. Visible signs of rejuvenation and repair may take a few weeks to become apparent, with the best results typically seen after completing a course of treatments tailored to individual needs.

How Long Do the Effects Last?

For scar treatment, the effects are permanent unless a new scar is created. For anti-aging, the effects can last up to 12 months. Microneedling is an excellent option for achieving an overall aesthetic improvement as it addresses multiple concerns in one treatment.

Recovery Time

Microneedling involves minimal downtime. You should not wear makeup for 24-48 hours post-treatment to reduce the risk of infection. You will be given bespoke skincare products to aid recovery, which should be used for at least 48 hours.

Microneedling Contraindications

Microneedling is not recommended if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Experiencing any infection or inflammation over the treatment area
  • Hypersensitive to the product’s contents
  • Prone to scarring/keloid/hypertrophic scarring
  • Allergic to anesthetics, stainless steel, or aftercare products
  • Have had cancer in the past five years
  • Have bleeding disorders
  • Have taken Roaccutane within the last six months
  • Suffering from autoimmune conditions like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

After Treatment Care

  • Any redness and irritation will subside within 3-4 hours. For the first 48 hours, avoid excessive sun exposure, hot showers, saunas and strenuous exercise.
  • Avoid swimming or strenuous exercises for at least the next 24-48 hours.
  • Use the correct aftercare, including gentle hydrating products recommended by your aesthetician.
  • Avoid active/exfoliating products for 5-7 days post-treatment.
  • Do not pull or pick at any loose skin following the treatment.

This comprehensive approach ensures that you achieve the best possible results from your microneedling treatment, while also minimising any potential risks or side effects.
